Last week, Georgetown’s Kevin Tobia, Nathan Schneider, and Brandon Waldon published an op-ed in The Hill about the Supreme Court case Garland v. VanDerStok, which addresses whether the legal definition of “firearm” covers disassembled kits sold online.

The piece builds on their amicus brief and research, arguing that linguistic theory can help resolve this legal issue. The case drew significant attention and was met with a full house at the oral arguments.

The team’s involvement, along with researchers from Schneider’s NERT lab, showcases Georgetown’s impact in applying computational linguistics to crucial legal debates.
